He didn't have to adapt to the nerve gas they bombarded him with because it is a poison. idk if Charles digging around inside your head is considered an attack but maybe reading surface level thoughts isn't and he can slowly adapt to close those off.

I picture he didn't do it just to troll but to also avoid repercussion since although truck-kun messed up.
