The crackling embers filled the dark room with a gentle noise. Soft golden light hugged the side of Astrid's face, illuminating the tear hanging from her lower right eyelid. Hundreds of thoughts were racing and piling on top of each other — presenting her with choices that carried the weight of mountains. The confidence she needed to press forward wasn't there. Her hands quivered looking at a resting Reimi. Astrid didn't know if she could protect the both of them. Doubts were ever-present, teasing and mocking every thought she had. It wasn't going to be easy no matter what happened from here, but Reimi didn't deserve any of this. How… how should things be, to keep her safe?
