Like if Noel tested them and they failed, so he sent them back to be slaves, that would be unbelievably cruel. Even worse than being purely a bystander. It gives off a weird vibe of: “if you are not talented and skilled enough, you don’t deserve to be freed from slavery.” Maybe it’s just me though. I hate the slavery trope in fantasy novels where the mc says they are against slavery, but then clearly takes advantage of slavery to benefit themselves.
