As the fight went on shirou remembered the information he collected from the visions over the past months. He had heard it from the sage Merlin himself what artoria was, she was the incarnation of the red dragon. Conceptually she was a dragon one of the highest-ranked phantasmal species, who are considered nature-given forms. Her body was an artificial one made by Merlin, it was a homunculus as a normal human body can't tolerate being born as a dragon as it would be like shoving the soul of a dragon in a mortal.
