This novel really emulates the phrase 'a whole bunch of nothing'. Even ignoring the content repetition, the story itself is incredibly bland. It's also written in a very unclear fashion, and the exposition of the cultivation-related aspects is horrible. The main character is a very shallow guy who treats people like tools. His wife is a tool for sex, his late-stage qi cultivation 'friend' is a tool to make money without bearing risks, and a woman he hasn't seen in years is a tool for him to be treated like a big shot by people. Also, he's in his sixties, and his wife was all of sixteen when he married her. Even those planning to curry favour with him always try to introduce him to 'young and beautiful' women. Nothing really happens in 30 chapters, and it doesn't seem like anything will in the future as well. His cheat is also unclear, and his use of it seems to be what the story concerns for now. I honestly would have dropped it earlier if I didn't need a fast pass.
It's been a while since I found a novel I've liked in the previews. This one has been quite good so far. Inheriting the body of a mediocre cultivator who used to abuse his disciples, the protagonist has to deal with both his disciples and the usual cultivation challenges, creating an interesting dynamic. I liked how a Nascent Soul cultivator's tribulation affected a large area and how it influenced the weather enough to trouble even cultivators. I also liked the way it takes time for the disciples to warm up to the protagonist after all the horrors they were subjected to by the original owner of the body. The plot with the random woman trying to make a move on him was a little irritating, but it is tied up neatly (for now, at least). Overall, it has potential.
Cigarettes are widely used in China for historical reasons. They are known to have around 300 million smokers. It's also entrenched in networking culture there; giving and taking cigarettes is a common initiation for social and professional interactions.
A very interesting read. Has a great world background and setup. I'm not an avid gamer, so I'm unaware of any inspiration from other sources. If truly original, it is a remarkable construction. I've read quite a few novels in which protagonists end up in positions with significant authority, but I haven't found one that describes the problems and responsibilities that come with the position as well as this one does, at least not on Webnovel. The plot is intriguing and seems to have been developed enough for readers to sense some direction. While the protagonist is strong enough to deal with most individual challenges he faces, the overarching goal is not straightforward to accomplish, which maintains some tension in proceedings. The protagonist himself is (as of chapter 296) in the dark about quite a few things, so there is an adequate sense of mystery, and the unfolding events slowly seem to come together, something akin to gradually adding more and more pieces to a jigsaw puzzle. It's not a flawless work; the translation isn't great, and some of the arcs aren't as well written as others. However, it is good enough to explore, even if the genre isn't your personal favourite. Overall, highly recommended.
Unfortunately, I've read quite a few novels like that. They start out well enough, but suddenly every woman is throwing herself at the main character. Somehow, the extremely cold and proud empress character is okay sharing her husband with other women. It's exceptionally idiotic.
I think this case has a lot more to do with company than just location.
Update: Apparently, it isn't a harem novel.
The very first paragraph of this book succeeds in immersing one in a different world. I've finished reading the free chapters, and I can say with conviction that it is a far better read than most. For a change, the ruling structure and power scaling seem to be well thought out, and the grudges and designs are interesting. The politics at play aren't laughable, and the people in power are described well enough. Some far-fetched events do occur, but it does not take away from the intrigue. However, the translation isn't great. It's not horrible either, but there are some glaring errors. For instance, a woman wrongly refers to her (step) son as 'husband' multiple times. Occasionally, entire paragraphs get lost in translation. I sincerely hope this novel doesn't end up being a harem novel. It would really take away from the character settings and would honestly make no sense. Given the way things are progressing, my somewhat sizeable experience reading CNs suggests that I may be disappointed in this regard, but one can still hope. The main character's lascivious thoughts on seeing beautiful women, in particular, make me feel that this work may be headed in such a direction. I'd be grateful to any kind soul who has access to the raws and can warn me about the future direction of this work before I continue.
I quite liked it. I usually enjoy reading family slice-of-life stories, and this one clears the checklist. Sweet moments, a leisurely pace, and well written characters. The problems faced by the main characters are real, and it is a grounded story. There is, however, a bit of an overly dramatic feel to events. Too many coincidences, too many forced situations that simply weren't required. Still, if you enjoy this genre, it is worth reading.
It's certainly very well written, with a nicely established world background. There are a few grammatical errors, but the meaning gets across well enough. The proceedings are interesting, with a sustained tension, and the schemes and machinations involved are fun to read. I personally liked how a seemingly desperate situation was gradually overturned, all due to the efforts of the protagonist. The trials were also constructed well, making them seem like an important event, rather than a random examination that could have been covered in a chapter or two, as most hunter exams in novels tend to be. So many chapters spent covering hunter exams should normally be a negative, but in this case, it is quite the opposite. However, the character designs could have been handled better. For some reason, the author chooses to give sexual undertones to every interaction the protagonist has with a woman. They are always flirtatious in nature, with the protagonist reciprocating to a certain extent. Emotional infidelity is a complex topic, but I'm sure most would agree when I say that it's not fair to his wife. The male characters introduced are almost always either eccentric and mysterious, or simply irritating in his perception. It is a repetitive setup in this sense. This work hasn't been updated in a while, so I'm not sure whether it'll be continued, but the available chapters finished on a real high note. It undeniably arouses my curiosity, and I've been left with the feeling of wanting more.
