Thank you for the advice, I'll be keeping them in mind. I want to give the mc some backstory, but I don't know how to include them yet. The chapters so far are pretty long and a bit pulled out, but I'm also not sure how to compress it. I'll try to keep improving as I go further into writing. I appreciate your review. Thanks.

I think I get what you meant now. But the word "things" here is used in a more abstract and general sense. It doesn't carry the same derogatory or dehumanizing connotation as when referring to individuals directly as "things." It's a way to categorize friends and family as important aspects or elements of life. So I don't think I'll be editing this. Sorry if you still feel offended.

I don't really get what's offensive about calling living beings as 'thing'. But all right, since it's supposedly offensive, what word do you suggest I change it with?
