The DNA test showed that Ian had no relation whatsoever with the Thornston sisters, which was true. However, adding the fact that Ian was tested and confirmed as related to Alex, i.e., using Brad's sample, it just proved the father-son relationship, playing into the narrative and cornering the sisters in their own game.
