I'd say its partly due to it being a translation and while many translator edit the novels to remove 'poison' they still try and keep faithful where they can and this isn't a point that needed 'fixing' or removing. In this case its also a common and rather well known idiom, even if the wording was slightly different the 'cooked rice' part is something most readers would already know and not need explaining. Its also a bit like Mt Tai, its become a cliche and meme unto itself and so its used, added and left in whenever it can be. You are reading a Chinese novel, even if its based on Japanese material and translated to English, most avoid changing too much because it doesn't fit or flow well when translated, English people don't speak like that, not even in writing or fiction, and even translating parts in Japanese terms doesn't always work either due to the cultural differences. Its why translators tended to leave common words and terms untranslated, Onii-chan etc for example works fine, but no English speaking person would use terms for older and young siblings in that way, and since it was so common, everyone soon learnt the terms. Its like with Crunchyroll and a few other sources, their translations are or were (I no longer watch new anime, so I don't know for sure) extremely cringe worthy. It wasn't paying that most fans had an issue with, it was poor quality and terrible translation jobs that put them off and that they lost the good quality subs and had to pay for horrible subs and cringe worthy terms like Pervy Sage in Naruto instead of Ero-Sennin which everyone was used to. Fansubs were done with passion and quality of the subs, the animation and more really showed the official media up 9 times out of 10. Though that is admittedly another matter altogether.
I get things had to change since he couldn’t have so many Knights or Bishops but why is it like this? So okay, Yuriko’s power depends on her strength even though its sounds like or is a magical ability (its explained in chapter chapter 37 and I had to go back since the line up made no sense to me before that re-reading it). Rei’s talent also makes sense for her to be a Spear-wielding Knight. So that is fine as well. Shizuka however deploys a healing field that boosts allies and restricts enemies, so Rook makes no sense since she really isn’t a fighter unless she lost her ditzy nature and unlocked a yandere mode or something.. I am not usually a fan of yandere’s per se, but somehow Shizuka as one seems rather cute and amusing since its so unlike how she normally acts.. Saya doesn’t make sense either since her ability is based on battlefield command and analysis, so while Rook offers protection, arguably so does Knight since she could avoid enemies better rather than tanking hits. Realistically her best position is beside Shizuka and perhaps her mother to protect the trio and therefore she could be a Pawn if not a Bishop since I would have expected her to have a talent as mage or at least be more talented as a mage than a fighter. Rika I’m mixed on, her ability is magical in nature so being a Bishop benefits her, but someone has to be a Pawn and someone with her combat ability and experience is arguably perfect for it especially since Pawn promotion is supposedly a deciding factor in many Rating Games. Being a Bishop is fine so long as the other Bishop and pieces make sense which at the moment they do not, or at least it feels that way to me. Saeko is perfect as both a Knight and a Pawn due to both her own kendo skills, nature and gained ability but since she is already Queen there is nothing that can be done about it I guess. Still, if others can change positions compared to what they supposedly were before, then so can she. Still I would have thought, Rei’s mum, Kiriko, being a former cop and the one that taught Rei to use a spear was better suited to either being a Knight or a Pawn, or at the very least, better suited than Shizuka is. In chapter 37 the Knight is the piece she supposedly gets though we get no information her ability if any and the same applies to Aoi and Alice as well. I’m not sure if its fanon knowledge or not, but it think Aoi Komura (Takashi’s mum) was a teacher for primary school or whatever its called in Japan before Middle School. She also had a daughter at the same school, again, it might be fanon knowledge but either way, there is nothing to make me think she had some real combat talent. I get its likely just focusing on named characters instead of OC ones, but even so, that set up just feels off..
He's from Fairy Tail I think, or at least its that Rogue that its talking about.
The worst part is I can totally imagine Bell saying that if this happened and just made me crack up all the more but at gone 5am.. well I wish I didn't..
The one that got to me was reading that doc oct took over his body and 'Peter' died, the end... After that is all doc oct in his place instead. I mean he dealt with clones, murdered girlfriends, those that simply left due to his secrets or focus on being spiderman, and in the end even died and was replaced with someone taking over his body... I think I raged for nearly a week after reading all that.
Priorities.. she sure has hers in the right place...
