cats ( and any other animals) show their belly when they believe the person in front of them is safe. It’s an instinct. The belly is the sort of weak point of any animal so they tend to defend it. A cat would never have shown it’s enemy it’s belly after a fight. It’s more a sight of surrender than victory.

On thing you need to understand is that this character is would consider pretty good. He is a brat that was blinded by success. The problem with this charactere comes after. If he can reflect on his action and become better or falls deeper will depend on the author. Evolution is what makes a character intersting not his mentality and actions. You can judge the author after this character evolves.

But we indeed don’t know every creature in the deep see. Great exemple of that is the Giant Squid that was only discovered avec seeing the injuries it dealt to a whale. However it is pretty much impossible for an entire see civilization to exist that we do not know of (because of the structure).

while we did not « explore » the entirety of the pacific ocean, we do know the entire landscape underneath. Radars are an amazing technology.
