Sounds like you evolved due to reading an ungodly amount of trash. Consider reading something well written like Overlord or Mistborn to cleanse your palate.

Exposition through dialogue is pretty lazy and inefficient. I'd rather the author just tell me what's up rather than wasting my time with boring dialogue.

"Kneeling before him was a 'dark man' in a beast-skin robe." You're either saying the beast-skin is what makes his skin dark. Or, you're saying 'only' dark-skinned men wear beast-skin clothing. Either way, these stereotypes are usually a sign to lazy writing, and bad storytelling. So, I don't like seeming them in stories that I'm reading. If you happen to know a similar story without these stereotypes, I'd appreciate it if you shared.

I was just hoping for a better setup. This could of been a great plot point if the writer thought of doing some leg work. The way the author wrote this just seems lazy.

I understand that these author are born within a different culture. Still, I don't see what difference that makes. This trope is lazy at best. "Hey, fat guy is lazy, fat guy is bad." It's a cop-out for writing a good character. No culture can be an excuse for lazy writing. However, I understand why you asked for an explaination. This trope isn't restricted to only these types of novels. By saying "these types of novels" I made it seem as if I hadn't seen it done by American authors or bad writers in general. That's a narrow minded way of looking at things. I wouldn't have worded my comment like this if I had written it today.

Me from the future: I take back what I said here. The MC's motivation is never tested or justified while his progress is mostly robotic. The greatest people on the planet took breaks and were often faced with failure, setbacks, self-doubts. Also, having a past life doesn't grant you unwielding will power and increased pain tolerance. If this was the case, those twice our age, would show some improvement in these categories but that ain't the case now is it? To top this all off. There aren't any interesting characters in this story. The mother is nothing more than a plot device for the MC to justify his inhuman work ethic. For the other characters I can't call them 2D in confidence because they're so one dimentional. All in all, this book was truly disappointing... 😔😔😔

Spoiler Alert: Almost everyone woman encountered after this arc is just treated as a walking fleshlight with a smile. So I take back my compliment to the author. He had me bamboozled.
