He also got smacked around by misty(I dislike her strongly). Hell in the first episode there was a censored scene where after fishing him out of a river, she slapped a ten year old kid for no reason!(this is actually true!) the fact that Brock just up and left his position without so much as a letter to the league. The fact that he didn't advance on Serena one bit.
