I feel like the basic rule for hiding identity should be that the main persona of the MC should be respected and not looked down upon. In that case the entire trope just stops being frustrating. It is still annoying and can be bad, but at least it does not invoke major negative emotions.

Im not sure if I've ever dropped a novel as fast as this one. The idea was nice, but from chapter 1 it stunk like a chinese copy-paste novel. Now with that cliche I'm done
