People in little communities have to depend on each other much more, and it's much easier to identify a potential threat when everyone else is your friend. In big cities, everyone you meet is a question mark.
Maybe she had simply been too stiff and closed off in her modern life. Here, she was more open.

Yeah, just not always something as involved as drying their own jerky or baking French pastries. I could just about manage mac & cheese and the occasional batch of chocolate chip cookies. 😅
