Read all your comments and they still don't make sense. Why would the author explain what the ointment is and how it works when it's completely irrelevant to the story. This paragraph only serves the purpose of showing that the MC can be highly intelligent in even the worst of situations, like war. It would be a waste of time to explain everything about the ointment, when it doesn't even have an effect in the next 3 chapters. It's not lazy writing, it's efficient and easy to understand writing.
