James never stated he would be the one to hurt Sophie if Arthur didn't accept his deal. It sounded more like a warning than a threat. I'm pretty sure most of us reading could figure that out.

I doubt happiness is the sole reason why people want to live. It can be much more instinctual in my opinion. It's most likely we want to live due to the fear of dying. Even suicidal people who can't find any joy in life often hesitate to take their own lives or straight up don't do so because they fear dying. I guess what I'm trying to say is most people want to live because they fear dying.
