Okay, I like it. I think, for what the plot was(though it was overblown) was very well handled, for the most part. I hope you can keep the overall feel of your writing style and Characters personalities intact as I thought they were very well written, in accordance with how they would act based on the novel. Back to your style of writing, I personally thought it was a very good, grim dark, and realistic while keeping the fantasy and mystique/mysticism alive. Also had a genuine, almost real feel to it.

“House sized defended” assuming you meant defender.

Skidmark is misspelled.

“A few ago” seems like days or weeks is missing from the sentence
