It was shown in the novel that his sword only reflects what he want most when he uses it. And what he wanted most in the beginning was to have a friend. Shang rejected that and started to see his sword for what it truly was, a sword. Leading it to become an inanimate object since it didn’t actually have any consciousness in the first place. Shang just made that up.
