You're criticizing a non-existent issue. It is not an author's job to put pictures in their comments. You don't see JK Rowling putting a picture after every descriptive paragraph.

They do care quite a lot, but I hit the 2000 word limit per chapter so I couldn't describe it any further and they are quite blase to death since a sizeable chunk of people with weak immune systems have died

Read further and you will see. Every society starts at the tribal stage, and as it develops the kids will switch their system of government. Also, since the kids made their own guns while nobody else has them, that gives them a huge edge in warfare and any war they fight will be a massacre.
