honestly i believe the santa is either being manipulated ( got this idea from his wife's sudden death to his abrupt change), is batsheet crazy or isn't as smart as he thinks ( because he could easily go to orphanages and stea*cough,cough* ahem, adopt kids and he'd get willing and happy kids in his fortress instead of unstable factors that other fables could use against him in future.

Finally, after a long and grueling day of cleaning, and after all of the guests were asleep and no longer in need of her services, she was allowed to rest. She would normally drag her tired soul down to the kitchen for her second meal, but tonight she had been picked off by one of the guests, so she just didn't have the energy to.
