gonna make a guess and say they were doing experiments to increase a person's lineage level, something like a common person becoming illegitimate or even illegitimate to direct. Obviously the experiment went wrong, the subjects mutated beyond control and made a havok out of the place, forcing the church to close the area down and do a coverup.
