This sounds largely unrealistic, to be honest. Any successful practitioner of any field, studying a new subject that lies within that field, will go about their business expecting a 70-80% room for error. I respect your reasons for this situation, but wouldn't an archmage have more than enough influence to get her punished? If not, why? I'm sure he understands this, but the thing is, he is taking part in a competition. Wouldn't it suck if the competition that literally decided your future (one that you should be able to win with enough effort) was lost, just because of a stubborn partner?
