carrying a bunch of pistols would be super awkward, cumbersome and heavy, and would provide no benefit over carrying one pistol. it makes much more sense to have one pistol, and several mag pouches.

the m249 is not a submachine gun, submachine guns fire pistol caliber rounds, the "sub" stands for sub-caliber, so an mp5, thompson, or mp-40 would be submachine guns. the m249 fires 5.56, an intermediate rifle round, there is a big difference between rifle and pistol rounds. the m249 is classified as an LMG or light machinegun, similar to an m60, mg-42, or 1919, though the m249 is admittedly on the light side for an LMG in comparison to proper full sized LMGs like those, especially the para model. that's what makes it so mobile though, and that's why they call it the SAW, "squad automatic weapon".
