Hmm, maybe it is not as clear but he did not crash because of the alcohol. The gate just awkwardly positioned in a way the ship had no space to avoid it. You can blame him for not carefully scouting beforehand but that is another issue. Also, he is not exactly thinking straight (being left alone in space kind of messes with your head)
