In IRL i dont have consistency as well. A minute ago i was planing to go out and buy some food, next its too expensive so no need. But in novels, characters need consistency so that we readers can see some of the future plans. At this point, reading about his "plan" to sell the ship couple chapter ago, is confusing.

When i was getting my weapon training, i also fired the auto rifle. Ofc i also had 100 score but for some reason my officers had different opinion. I think Alex has the same issue. We hit the target without issue but others cant see it for some reason.
