Also with your point about how they don't have to end badly. THIS ARC IS A TRAGEDY. The whole point is it ends badly This gets me onto my idea. He should've killed himself giving her motivation to join the clowns and it would fulfill the tragic arc where the main character dies.
In fairness you wrote a very good example of a perpetia but the example isn't necessarily a peripitia as it isn't a massive shift in a character's fate and James bond doesn't change.
What you described was a sudden reveal. Perpetia is when the tragic hero makes 1 bad choice (or a series of bad choices) which causes their whole life to spiral out of control culminating in their death
Peripitia is the actual downfall.
I don't think that's right. A peripitia is in a tragedy a sudden reversal of fate after having a fatal flaw.e.g Macbeth starts off noble but then his greed (his hamartia) makes him go evil (his peripitia) this normally concludes in the death of the tragic hero.So overall Peripitia is not a sudden reveal but a massive shift in character.
