that guy needs to train with sword real quick. His inexperienced movements and awkward fights makes this novel really boring.

well,to be a good swordsman you dont need big and wild swings, you need precise and as much as small movements to take down the enemy. But if you are fighting with several people you need to occupy the space so it's okay to do wild big swings. And footwork is very important as well. You shouldn't stand at one place forever,you need to move always. Though they are in the water so do not know anything.
However, just being in good physical shape did not make one a good swordsman. It was a prerequisite to a certain extent, yes, but the ancient skill of killing with swords had a bit more finesse to it than simply giving a chimpanzee a sharp metal stick. - zoradante1yrCommented
Now one real quick tip, no people used sharp swords to train,or a light duel like that. Not only it's dangerous it could also cause the edges of sword to destroy. I think replacing sharp swords with training swords would be better. Though that would take away the excitement so I understand why you chose that
