Cones measure different frequencies correlated to the red/green/blue color ranges. There are rare individuals with an extra cone that see even more colors. All that is necessary is to modify a cone such that it perceived the frequency range that correlates to the desired radiation band, such as infrared, ultra violet, x-ray, and (yes) Gamma ray.
To put it in a different way, it was like trying to observe gamma radiation with the naked eye. You simply couldn't, and trying to mess with things you didn't understand risked incurring radiation sickness!- Mark_McKinney1hCommented

If he returned to his office and sat behind his terminal to research neural interface technology and use that knowledge to compromise a neural interface, then he'd definitely leave traces behind. Even with the major's cooperation, they couldn't guarantee complete privacy. He's already crossed the line by knowingly working on a mech with a compromised neural helmet. Tampering with one himself isn't as big a leap as presented.

So, the man who created a taboo weapon and participated in restoring a mech that harms its pilot is afraid of the MTA for breaking yet another taboo? Never let us forget the nature of their mission. Ves seems to be on a course to pretty much violate every convention known to man.
