That wasn’t really what I was saying. Sure he could have been more greedy with his money and that would have made sense but that wasn’t the issue I had. The dollar values simply don’t make sense. The main character is still profiting off of the chess board sales which is impossible if he is selling them for the equivalent of $0.001. It is simply impossible to produce anything in any country for a tenth of a cent. It has nothing to do with the MC being greedy or not. Again my main complaint was that the economics of the novel simply do not work which could largely be fixed if the USD values were simply removed entirely from the novel. Although even then there would be issues, just not as glaringly obvious. As far as the soap thing goes that was more of a minor issue although it still made little sense in that regard. The soap was his main source of income at that point in the novel and he basically just gave away the production method for free in a holier than thou moment. That doesn’t make sense. There are many other ways this could have been dealt with like buying a stake in other soap companies and giving them the production method in return. In that regard it wouldn’t be purely charity that is literally giving away the market he created for little reason while still benefiting lots of people. Either way the soap incident in the grand scheme of things as I said was just one small problem out of the larger issues that I mentioned in my review.
USD didn’t exist 1000 years ago. The MC came from the modern world first chapter talked about them sitting on the computer all day and they were complaining about a lack of air conditioning. It wouldn’t make sense for the author to convert the currency into USD from 100-200 years ago either as 1. The math still would not add up you can’t by a chess set for $0.001 no matter what year you try to set the currency and 2. The USD conversions seem to be added for perspective so any number except the modern value would not achieve that and make no sense. 3. The main character as I said is from the modern world so it would be converting it into the USD value the character is familiar with.
I rarely write reviews but this whole story was a massive disappointment. Going into this I thought it would be really good due to the amount of 5 star reviews and the concept of the novel however I was quickly disappointed. There a three main issues that I have with this novel 1. The author has a weird grasp of economics, the way the currency was setup up had problems from the beginning however these could be overlooked until the author decided to start adding USD conversion at which point everything went downhill. For perspective the author claims that maids in the MCs family get paid a relatively high wage of 1 gold a month. However the author later says that 1,000 gold = $10,000 (1 gold = $10) meaning that the maids make less than 1/560 of the average monthly salary in the US. This could maybe make sense if the MC was in a third world country where labor costs were low however the MC is the son of the richest family in the world and obviously does not live in a poor area. I got past this point however and kept reading, however shortly after when the MC introduces chess it is priced at 100 bronze per set which would be $0.001 per set. You can buy ramen in most gas stations for $1 meaning 1 ramen noodles container = 1,000 chess sets. Make it make sense. Again this would maybe be fine if the author didn’t bring up the amount the MC made in USD repeatedly. 2. The MC tries to implement modern social practices that do not make sense in a medieval setting onto this world (e.g. The MC tries to force all the house staff to work a maximum of 8 hours per day and no more, great thought except it makes no sense in a medieval society where work hours are determined by sunrise and sunset) 3. Cringe / Cliche. Everything seems to always work out perfectly for the MC with little to no effort, MC follows reincarnator 101 on steroid template to make money using modern ideas but has an AI that does all the work and creates perfect blueprints. What really irked me though was the MC just straight up giving away the soap recipe to other people because he didn’t want to hurt their business and wanted everyone to live peacefully and happily. Verdict: Had and has potential, author should rewrite what they have an try again. Would not recommend reading until the author makes some edits and fixes some of the biggest issues specifically the currency.
Another reason why the currency conversion to USD makes no sense that is $0.001 or 1/10 of a cent for a chess board. Keep in mind that a relatively cheap large chocolate bar goes for around $1 in the US that means that one cheap large chocolate bar = 1000 chess sets.
I really can’t with the USD conversion please just use gold coins instead. Considering his family is the richest family in the world they live in the richest part of the world and labor costs should not be significantly cheaper anywhere else so if the maids who the author claims make a high salary make 1 gold coin a month these dollar conversions make absolutely no sense and are completely immersion breaking. If the maids make 1/560 the average monthly salary in the US with the currency being converted than there is something seriously wrong with the conversion and the USD amount is completely meaningless. Keep in mind that in the US today it’s not like the average salary is even that high when looking at wealth distribution. Wealth distribution today is more skewed today in the US that during the time period that lead to peasant revolts and the French Revolution. The US only has a relatively high salary when compared to third world countries and obviously if the main characters family is the richest in the world they do not life in a poor area.
$40,000 a month does not put you in the top 1% in the US. Top 1% earners in the US make slightly less than 800k the actually monthly amount would be roughly 66k
Makes absolutely no sense. Maybe if you were just converting the value of the gold in the coins to gold prices at present times it would be worth 10,000 USD but assuming that you are doing currency conversion since anything else would not actually be the value of the coins. If a maid makes 1 gold coin a month which is considered a high salary then considering that the average salary in the US per month is $5,600, 1000 gold coins would equal at least $5,600,000. Even if you said the maids who supposedly are paid a high salary get 1/10 the average salary that would still equal $560,000. 10k is absurdly low. That would mean the maids make $10 dollars a month in present money value or roughly 1/560 of the average wage converting the currency value which is obviously not true. However this still makes absolutely not since even if you were considering the price of gold today and converting it based on that. A 1 ounce 24k gold coin which is a fairly standard size is roughly 31 grams of gold and gold goes for about $88 per gram. That would mean in todays money 1, 1 ounce gold coin would be equal to $2,728 and 1000 would be equal to $2,728,000 which again is no where near $10,000. No matter how you look at it $10,000 is an absurdly low number
