He’s not acting for the system unwillingly as both him and the system actually have a common goal of wanting to go back to earth together, and the only way Ronald knows how to do that is by finishing the plot

The main reason why he wants to return back to earth is because he’s suffered so much playing as a villain in the novel that he wants absolutely nothing to do with the novel world anymore and just wants to return back home. I also understand the frustration with him being dense and not knowing/denying about how the story has changed compared to the original but keep in mind that he’s been with the heroines in his previous life before the regression for 7 years now, and all of them have treated him extremely badly and even inhumane, so it’s hard for him to accept the changes as he thinks that the heroines secretly have an ulterior motive rather than them actually loving them now and whatnot. Of course he already realizes the story changing majorly and the heroines’ love for him a few days after his regression already, but he hates being in the novel world so much that he is willingly ignoring this just so he can try and get back to earth(as completing the plot is the only current way he knows how). All of these questions besides the reason why she cares about the MC and why she was there when the MC was about to die are actually all explained in the later chapters. I can tell you the reason why she was there before he was about to die was actually because she was actually already in love with him beforehand, but the reason why she fell in love with him is a spoiler though so unfortunately I can’t directly tell you, but there are some hints dropped throughout the later chapters that might give you a pretty good idea as to why. Hope this helps!
