They had slowly poisoned royal family members, allowed mothers to die while giving birth, caused countless still births, and who knows what else. Also maester pycelle had gotten Aerys addicted to milk of the poppy causing many issues and he added medicines that enhance the symptoms of madness he was having instead of treating them. He purposely gave him a mixture of milk of the poppy mixed with other herbs to cause him to have constant horrifying nightmares and with Varys whispering in Aerys ears increasing his paranoia it made him a time bomb. The Citadel was determined to get rid of the Targaryens and Aerys downfall started before he ever got captured by the Darklyns where Tywin and Rhaegar delayed rescuing him.
