They did have smart walkers in the earlier season. At this exact scene, some walker picked up a stone to break the glass. Then Morgan's wife trying to unlock the door, etc. I heard the new writers or something scrap the idea of smart walkers then brought them back on the later seasons.

It is pretty hard at the start but once you know the things you should know (its hard to explain 😆), it gets easier. Differential Equations (Its like an upgrade of Calculus) is where it starts to get iffy.
