I'm not sure, but i would guess it has something to do with the Confucius four gentleman plants' poetry stuff. plum blossoms (when they say plums in their poetry they often also mean the blossoms) for endurance and resilience in hardship; bamboo representing uprightness, humility, and strength with flexibility; Orchid representing elegance, refinement, moral nobility and inner peace; and chrysthamthemum representing aloofness, longevity, and standing apart from the crowd
