This reminds me of a quote "Being kind to your enemies is being cruel to yourself." For me it depends on how big of an an enemy the enemy actually is.
In the novel, Edward did not want to kill his enemies. He had moral integrity, selflessness, and self-sacrifice, and he didn't even want to kill his enemies unless forced to. Your typical hero.
