I’m not really a fan of that kind of plot; I think it would be much more interesting to see the protagonist studying the power of runes... but even so, the story is still very captivating.

It’s something I really don’t understand; since the protagonist wasn’t going to kill Damon during the duel, severing his arm just created a more formidable enemy—it would have been better to simply beat him up and then quietly get rid of him.

I don't know, it seems like a bit of an overreaction; magic isn't actually that rare during the Dance of the Dragons. I think playing around with fireballs isn't all that impressive compared to the legacy of Old Valyria's sorcery—knowing how to forge Valyrian steel would be far more impressive.
