I enjoyed this story. sometimes it would get confusing with deciphering if “He” was referring to a Proper name or a pronoun in a particular sentence but it wasn’t anything to scream at the author/editor about.

Only the main wife can be called mother by the children, including those born to concubines. All concubines are called aunts. Or at least that’s the way it was explained in other novels.

Or maybe they used that term because most people have seen the pics of refugees from African countries in the 1980s so it is an easy reference for the readers. It would definitely be preferable to write it as “refugees from famine stricken areas” but I don’t I think personally don’t think that the author had malicious intentions. I hope not anyway.
