Portals allowed humans to travel to and back form locations that they had been to before. They were often used to travel to other planets. we are privy to information the mc isnt so its easy for us to speculate and guess but in a realistic scenario his theory is pretty sound considering the information he has aquired.. mc isnt dumb he just isnt omniscient
