there is a lovely psychological disorder known as trauma induced paranoia. it's not a rare phenomenon, though it is typically much more problematic and can actually be a symptom of psychosis or, in rare cases, sociopathy. In this case, however, it actually would seem to be linked with a form of PTSD. It's quite fascinating to study.
