I can't believe that so many people are saying this is a dumb mindset, I think she's completely correct in thinking that. The academy wants a stereotypically perfect hero, not someone who has wants and desires.

Yeah, but I wonder what they are in the book.
They even have a colossal dome, which replicated the sky, protecting them from being seen by the outside world from above-- that alone would have been costly.
