Eh, I'd still boil it. If you can find some soft wood, you can even treat it with steam to bend it, carve it and treat it right, using that as a particulate filter, then boiling it and creating a second more refined filter after that. Water has never been too much of a problem for me in the wild so I only know a little about it.
Look up ancient alchemy notes, they are all about getting the best product even if you have garbage resources. An ancestor of mine had notes on how to build an entire lab with just what you can find anywhere. Got terrible clay? No problem! His notes have exact instructions on how to turn that into something more than 95% as good as the best clay for the job. Chemistry was WILD back then. And just FYI, Alchemy is just Chemistry written in a different language and refers to ancient arabic chemistry.

To be fair, I think I am average cook myself, but my chef girlfriend can only complain about the smallest things like maybe a bit too low on salt and the like. she treats me as if I can do no wrong when cooking except for when I bake something and she alwaus says "it tastes like digestive biscuits." which is starting to drive me crazy.
