Spear have more advantage than most melee weapon. With sword, spear have advantage at range and in long battle you will have advantage because you can maintain your distance easily to catch up breath. With knife/dagger you can reach your opponent faster than them and can maintain distance easily to not get your vital stabbed. And fist, while mana is a thing in here you can easily overpower opponent that use bare hand when you use it too. Not to mention spear has other form too like blade spear like what four great general of China used in the past'. Maybe the melee weapon can hold ground with spear is long sword as it too has the same advantage when used in battle. But then again that too tied tighly with expertise the user said weapon.
