Mostly War. They do fight in space against other races. It's a common trope but it's a rather realistic one. I believe there could be other ways they would die. What you mentioned could be one reason, of course. I'd say when it comes to augments from other races forcefully added or such, yeah.

Very interesting concept. I can only see it bringing about chaos as everyone focusing greedily on themselves, following paths that ends up leading nowhere due to others acting in similar ways. Who would want to remain a peasant if there were paths to glory? This is very interesting, i'll give you that.

The bonus it gives is a passive absorption of spiritual energy (though very little) => Cause non-sentient beasts don't have the conscious like humans to cultivate.
