That's part of the point. I don't know. I admit I have seen only the anime, so I don't have a clear picture, but to label something as a subspecies there needs to be a prior study. What was shown was simply people hating and fearing the possibility that they would become monsters, without even taking into consideration HOW the eventual transformation could occur. I sure as hell lack a lot of info in that regard, but the basics? Pure lack of survival instincts
