Ehhhhh well sure that he would be avble to cause more damge and to mercilessly do it, but if you focus on inflicting pain you don't focus on killing. And on top of that being distracted because you enjoy your opponent's wails can be deadly. So the increase in fighting capacity doesn't seem that great.
With this shifted mentality, all of his thoughts were on the actual battle in front of him, he wanted to cause the maximum amount of pain, he felt enjoyment in his opponent's cries and sorrows. While this 'state' dramatically increased his combat potential, Number 3 was right; he wasn't in control of himself during those moments.
