Well as far as we know the book writes the name of the soul ir is targeting, basing it off the fact the map used similar mechanics to show names, Our mc is a lost soul in Tom's body he doesn't know his name or anything of his past life and him being the Tom of another reality all these can result in a glich and if voldemort is as smart as he is shown he would have predicted a glich will happen just because edmund is a Tom of another reality and with his extensive knowledge of soul and hogwards he could made it to work in his way.
