I kinda think they did him a disservice not severing the bond sooner with him. why didn't Ash openly and flat out reject him? Why not mate to Caleb sooner so her bond with Granger would be broken? He waited two years and endured a lot... and it pushed him into Holden's hands to become this monster that he ended up. it doesn't excuse him but it would have possibly helped him get out of his delirium that she was still his.
