Your opinion is true, but not the truth. We learn mathematics, languages and different subjects in schools. Why the MC is taught about Magic goes with the same reason, to know what and how it is so that in the future, we won't be utterly clueless about it. He may not use it, but he wouldn't be in a daze when he sees someone cast a spell. Shouldn't the basic information about Magic a necessity for survival on a continent literally running on Magic?

Just like how the change in composition can make the cake go from best to better to good to bad to worse and to worst, the person in deed determines the amount of strike and block by varying the elements. Put in too much AGI and it may pierce. Put in more STR and that's a firm wall.
