Not a dumb question at all. The key point is transmigration and reincarnation. As a Sentinel, you would get different missions where you transmigrate to different realms, you assume various identities and ages, and when you complete your mission, you return to the Sentinel realm. Your memories are not affected at all when you return, like going to various cities to complete a job. However when the Sentinel die, their soul reincarnate. The soul passes through the six rivers of the Netherworld and their memories are wiped. They become a completely new person without any knowledge of their life as a Sentinel.
