The Sinclair is a very old and powerful family. Them being very old means that there are branch families and the surname is common enough. Another point is that they are so powerful that people can't immediately relate the person they see to the family. Imagine having a neighbour with the surname 'Windsor' you would not think that the person is related to the British royal family. Hope this helps.
