Author means more along the lines of a fight, the for example master earth bender can just enclose you in a rock dome and crush you in an instant, or make you sink into the floor, or just throw something so big at you you cannot dodge or block, or just go through the ground to dodge your attacks, or if you have a sword, just cover himself in rock armor cause a sword will not cut that.
