I reread chapter 1 it never mentioned that he died on his first mission. He did join a mercenary group thanks to a friend and he died on a mission because of a grenade

It's not being unscrupulous but stupidity, he saved a grandmother by massacring one of the 3 gangs of this city. After he comes to save only the girl but poses in the middle of all the survivors desperate then the massacres after they have enough the attack for obvious reasons then they captured the dog who is the leader of the pack which shows that he could have saved the survivors, he shows that he is empathetic then just after like a cold-blooded killer for no reason
