I read a staory where the MC is a monster and can only be a human for a small amount of time (Eight or so hours max at later in the story) and it portrays his beast part okay i guess, But it also focused too much on the human aspect of being a beast which kinda ruined it for me so i can see very well where your coming from.

Its not that he's a god of something, he does not get power from being to god of a specific thing. Being a god of something is a title that means that your either the best or one of the best in that category. He is not the god of something because he chooses not to be, but might choose to be the god of ice(as mentioned before).
